Local Manufacturing Key to Africa’s Mining Future, Says AZ Armaturen
Africa has the potential to produce mining services and equipment domestically to meet the growing demand from critical minerals projects, according to Volker Knoth, Managing Director of AZ Armaturen South Africa.

Speaking with Energy Capital & Power during the Critical Minerals Africa 2024 forum, Knoth highlighted the increasing demand for specialized valves across Africa’s mining sector and the company’s commitment to fulfilling this demand, while advancing South Africa’s local content agenda.

“We are a local manufacturer, hence above 70% on local content on most of our products,” said Knoth, sharing success stories of employees who have advanced from roles like drivers to external sales and senior positions. “Manufacturing here means local employment. At AZ Armaturen, there is a journey for everyone, it depends on performance and willingness.”

Knoth urged African nations to retain value within their borders by moving beyond simply supplying raw minerals. “We are here and there is no need for African mining projects to import from overseas – stay in Africa. Countries must check they are not just supplying the minerals, but are keeping value addition in-country for the benefit of people.”

Commenting on mining sustainability, Knoth explained AZ Armaturen’s efforts to refurbish and repurpose end-of-life valves. This approach reduces environmental impact and can save clients up to 40% compared to purchasing new valves.
